Agates were discovered between the 3rd and 4th centuries BC by a Greek philosopher and naturalist named Theophrastus along the Achates river, now known as the Dirillo River in Sicily. The name agate is derived from the river’s name, Achates. Agates are made of chalcedony and quartz and come in an array of colors. One of their distinguishing features is the beautiful banding effect within the gemstone.
Since its discovery, the Agate has been used in many applications, including decorative arts and jewelry making. This popular gemstone bead deserves a place in your bead collection or your beading project, with so many lovely variations and colors available.
Agates are known for providing a sense of safety and security—bringing peace and calm to the wearer.
